About Us

About Us

At First Step Family Violence Intervention Services, Inc., we have been dedicated to transforming lives since 1992. What began as a support group for victims of domestic violence has evolved into a comprehensive network of services for individuals affected by family violence. With the opening of our Hope House shelter in 1996, we provide a safe haven and essential resources for healing. Join us in our mission to create a supportive community where individuals can find hope and healing.

Mission Statement

To promote safety to victims of violence through education, counseling, advocacy and shelter when needed to any person suffering the effects of domestic violence and/or sexual assault. To promote non-violent behavior by educating the perpetrators of violence.

Our Beginnings

First Step Family Violence Intervention Services, Inc., was established in September 1992 with a weekly support group for victims of Domestic Violence. Initially, the organization aimed to provide a safe space for those affected by violence to share their experiences and seek support from one another.

In February 1993, the Muskingum Area Board of Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services funded the program through the Coshocton County Drug and Alcohol Council.
This funding was crucial in laying the foundation for a comprehensive approach to tackling family violence in our community. To meet the emerging needs of the community, services expanded in September, 1994 through a much needed and requested weekly support group for children victimized by family violence between the ages of 6-12 years.
This innovative program aimed to provide safe emotional support and coping mechanisms for our youngest victims.

In November 1994, a nine member board was selected as the Board of Control. The board members, comprising local leaders and advocates, brought diverse skills and insights to guide the organization’s mission. This milestone signified a formal recognition of our commitment to addressing domestic violence in the region. First Step, F.V.I.S. was incorporated on April 1, 1995.
The ultimate goal was accomplished on December 16, 1996 with the opening of the Coshocton County Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence and/or Sexual Assault (Hope House). This shelter not only offered a safe haven but also provided essential resources for rebuilding lives after trauma. This partnership underscored our belief in holistic support systems that encompass both human and animal welfare. After opening the shelter, we were very thankful to the Friends of the Animal Shelter for making possible the availability of a small pet shelter for animals belonging to the families of those we serve.

Through the years, we have seen countless families transform their lives, illustrating the profound impact of our services
